A systematic approach to the third energy revolution
About us
The Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems (EIRES) is TU/e’s answer to the broad, multidisciplinary question that is the energy transition. EIRES facilitates the collaborative development and swift deployment of new technologies and devices by bringing together TU/e researchers working on materials, systems, and processes for energy storage and conversion. Our approach is based around societal impact: working on fundamental challenges underlying the development of systems with the potential for rapid upscaling and market penetration. That is why we promote academic research driven by societal challenges, with close partnerships between academia and the high-tech manufacturing industry in the region.

☀ Why reusing old solar panels might be more impactful than recycling? CORE CHANGEMAKERS, once a student team from Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, is leading the charge with their Ikaros project, exploring ways to deploy used panels in social housing. Their innovative approach promises a greener future and sparks optimism for a more sustainable energy ecosystem. 📰 Must read: in this Vrij Nederland article EIRES researcher Heleen de Coninck answers questions like: Can we achieve sufficient sustainability within the current system? Will we get there with small steps in the right direction? Is fundamental system change needed? And if so, why? Tip of the hat: 'Fundamental change does not come out of the blue. In the Netherlands, fossil is slowly being replaced by solar and wind energy. This is partly because we have started to close coal-fired power plants here. So active phase-out policy.' Actief afbouwbeleid dus.’ #duurzaamheid #systeemverandering #energietransitie #transitie

Join us online! 💻 | 𝗘𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗦 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗟𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 with Professor Claudia R. Binder - EPFL This lunch lecture is scheduled as follows: 📆 Friday 17 May 2024 ⌚️ 12h00-13h00 💻 Online MS teams 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐨-𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 In this presentation we focus on three core aspects in energy transitions. First, enabling flexibility: How flexible are consumers in their daily use of technologies given changes in their environment? Second, drivers and barriers of change: what are the triggers and barriers of technology adoption (PV)? How do adopters differ among themselves and how do they differ from potential and unlikely adopters? What role does technology co-adoption play? Third, connectivity and social norms: how do social networks affect technology adoption? When and how do they stabilize a transition process? Looking forward meeting you online! This lunch lecture is organized by Floor Alkemade and Christina Papadimitriοu ℹ️ More about the speaker, full program & registration ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eSpsyftN #eires #energy #energytransition #renewableenergy

EIRES – Eindhoven Institute for Renewable Energy Systems reposted this
Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director Automotive Systems at Eindhoven University of Technology
Yesterday, we had a great Nationaal Groeifonds “Charging Energy Hubs” kick-off event at the Automotive Campus! Currently, we are facing challenges from an electricity grid perspective with the enormous increase in electricity demand for emission-free vehicles and the increase in renewable energy production. This currently results in balancing and capacity problems on the electricity grid, putting a brake on the #electrification of #mobility and the #logistics sector. With my group within the Control Systems Technology (CST) TU/e section in cooperation with other industrial partners, we’ll be looking from a system’s perspective at optimizing the grid design on how to optimally connect and specify the different (local) energy storage, bi-directional conversion systems and sustainable energy resources being balanced with the varying energy demands from different loads. Since, its optimality also depends on how it is controlled we will be co-developing congestion-aware control strategies. This requires a new simulation and analysis tool set at optimizing the coupled design problem of the hardware assets with its control at the shared variables and parameters. #digitaltwin #smartmobility #controldesign #systemengineering #charginginfrastructure #fastcharging #energystorage #sustainableenergy #electrification

This afternoon Maximilian Demnitz organized an EIRES lecture on underground hydrogen storage, presented by Professor David Smeulders. 💡 The lecture focused on underground hydrogen storage, which is expected to be a cornerstone of long term, large volume hydrogen storage in the future. David gave insight into field of applications, a technology overview, current challenges/research, and requirements for underground storage to become part of the hydrogen economy. The hydrogen lectures are organized monthly and highlight a specific part of the hydrogen value chain. The lectures are presented in a way so that they are easy to follow and understand for non-experts of the scientific field as well. They are part of a TU/e wide initiative to set up a hydrogen community to allow for collaboration between researchers. Questions about the lectures? Send an email to Max: m.demnitz@tue.nl More info about the hydrogen community? Email Maja Rücker: m.rucker@tue.nl #hydrogen #lectures #community

Salt and water like to hold each other. As a result, together they are very suitable for holding energy as well. This gave our scientists the idea of developing a salt battery. 🔋 In a new episode of Universiteit van Nederland, Joey Aarts explains exactly how that works. And that with such a salt battery you can store enough energy for an entire winter. Will we all have such a device in the shed in a few years? Who knows! Watch the entire video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eu6i2ZAe (English subtitles included) or listen to the podcast on your preferred podcast channel! #saltbattery Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
